Things to remember while gifting pets to children.

Updated: Apr 8

Important points to keep in mind while gifting pets to children

According to the World Economic Forum, Google searches for pet, dog, and cat adoption boomed during the early phases of the pandemic. There was a 250% increase in global searches by would-be pet owners during April and May 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. When the lockdown began, people got stuck at their homes, and pets became a source of companionship for many. Although chances of pets carrying the virus existed, people turned to pets to fight loneliness and depression.

pets are a beloved companion for humans

Pets have been a beloved companion for humans for centuries. And it is not a surprise that often, children are the ones who request to keep animals as pets. Not only do these animals provide company and amusement, but they can also teach children valuable lessons in responsibility, empathy, and nurturing. In this regard, pets can teach children to learn about the world around them and develop crucial life skills.

owning a pet is a life long commitment

The pet owner must take care of their animals. Owning a pet is a lifelong commitment that requires constant care and attention. We should teach the child about proper pet care before giving them a pet. It includes feeding, grooming, and exercising the pet. It is important to potty train your pets and teach them how to behave in public places or when confronted with strangers.

Additionally, you should ensure your pets are vaccinated and seek medical attention whenever they fall sick. Pets are a long-term commitment, so be prepared for the responsibility of pet ownership. We need to provide a home for the pet for the duration of their life, which can be up to 15 years or more for some pets. If you get bored when the newness wears off, it is better not to buy a pet.

pets are great companions

I have a lot of love for animals, but allergies to pet dander refrained me from keeping them as pets at home. My son has been persistently asking for a puppy or a kitten, but I had to turn down his request since he is allergic too and sneezes frequently. During my childhood, we had several cats at home, and the hair from their fur could be found everywhere - on sofas, beds, cushions, and chairs, which eventually led to my allergies. Therefore, it is better to think again if you or your children suffer from respiratory diseases or allergies. Different pets have different needs and personalities, so choose the right pet for the child and their family wisely. For example, a cat may be a good choice for a small apartment, while a dog is better for a family with a big yard.

Instead of buying a pet from a breeder or pet store, consider adopting a pet from a shelter. It will teach your child about the importance of rescuing animals and can also help reduce the number of animals in shelters. There are a lot of abandoned animals in shelters seeking a forever home.

children love pets

If you prefer exotic and imported breeds, remember that such demands lead to illegal large-scale breeding. Unscientific breeding can lead to genetic disorders in newborns. These practices are unethical. Animals are kept in unhygienic conditions and treated mercilessly by the breeder.

Remember that adopting a pet is a huge responsibility that demands constant love, care, and attention. Just like humans, pets can also go into depression or sickness when not properly taken care of. Therefore, it is better to avoid pet parenting if you feel you might abandon it in the future. Remember, pets are not an option you can discard when you get fed up. They are living souls that require constant care and attention.
